Frost Free Spigots in Eyota MN may bring Flooded Basements this Spring

May 13th, 2019 · No Comments

Frost Free Spigots (aka, your outdoor faucet) on the exterior of your home may be a potential problem this Spring in Eyota, MN. The outcome of the problem is a flooded basement. These faucets or spigots prevent the water pipe from splitting due to freezing. However, many times the damage that occurred during cold temperatures is hidden until it is too late. ServiceMaster of Rochester and our IICRC Certified Technicians are here to help you!

How does a frost free spigot or faucet leak? The objective of a frost free spigot is to allow the shutoff for your outside faucet to drain excess water. When you shut off the faucet, water continues to run out for a couple seconds. The shutoff valve is located back in your wall where temperatures remain above freezing. However, if the water is not allowed to drain, during cold temperatures it will freeze. And when it freezes it expands therefore splitting the pipe.

The next step creates a mess for homeowners. As they are watering the garden or washing a care, they are filling their basement or home with water. The split releases water inside while the homeowner is spraying outside.

ServiceMaster of Rochester offers these quick tips:

  1. Never leave a hose connected to your outside faucet or spigot. This is especially true over the winter.
  2. Check your outside faucets before using. Turn them on for 10 seconds. Turn them off. Water should continue to flow out of the spigot for a couple seconds after it is shut off.
  3. If the water pressure outside seems low, inspect on the inside. Look for water coming out of the wall or ceiling in the area where the outside faucet pipe enters the home. Another sign is a “hissing” noise from inside the wall or ceiling. If either of these are true events, you should shut off the water and call a professional plumber.

ServiceMaster of Rochester is here to assist you when your frost free spigot malfunctions. We can help you get your life back to normal quickly and efficiently. We will work with your insurance company to not only mitigate the loss but work through the paperwork as well. Call the friendly staff at ServiceMaster of Rochester today at (507)282-5747!

Beware of Ice Dams in Plainview MN

March 7th, 2019 · No Comments

Welcome to Spring!  Everyone is happy now that warmer temperatures are upon us.  However, warmer temperatures and large amounts of snow on roofs lead to ice dams.  So beware of ice dams in Plainview MN and the surrounding areas as winter ends.

“What is an ice dam?”  Ice dams are caused by snow melting on a homes roof during the day.  Then, melted snow freezes at night near the lower edge of the roof.  Day after day this melted snow builds a layer of ice. The ice can be one inch thick to a foot thick depending on the roof slope.  This ice then acts as a “dam” that continues to collect water during the day that freezes into more ice at night.  As the ice layer expands it raises shingles in roof valleys and on the roof itself.  Once the ice is under the shingles and begins to melt it enters the attic, ceiling, or wall of the house as water causing water damage.  This is the time to call a professional water damage restoration company like ServiceMaster of Rochester.  Many people are not even aware of ice dams or the damage they may cause.

The University of Minnesota Extension Service has a great article on “Dealing with and Preventing Ice Dams”.  There are a few simple steps to ensure that ice dams don’t cause unnecessary damage to your home.

  1.  Walk around the outside of your home to look for ice dams.  An indication of ice dams is large icicles hanging down from the eaves especially in valleys and on the side of the house not exposed to the sun.
  2. If snow has accumulated on the roof, purchase a roof rake at one of many home improvement or hardware stores.
  3. Using the roof rake, remove snow 3-4 feet from the edge of your roof all the way around your home.
  4. If ice has already formed, you may need to hire a qualified roofing contractor for ice removal.
  5. When water enters the home, you may or may not see visible signs immediately.  If you start to smell odors that are not common or see staining on ceilings or walls, that is the time to call a professional water damage restoration expert to meter your walls and ceilings to determine the path of the water and assist you in drying the structure.

Do not wait to mitigate water damage from ice dams.  ServiceMaster of Rochester has professional, IICRC Certified technicians to assist you when ice dams are a problem for your family.  Contact us today by calling (507)282-5747 or searching ServiceMaster of Rochester.

While most people think that water damage is caused by large amounts of water flowing through their home or business, it can come from something like a burst pipe spewing water in every direction or a small and very subtle leak. Whatever the case may be, learn how to spot water damage and know who to call for water damage cleanup and restoration. In Stewartville, MN, water damage restoration can be obtained through ServiceMaster of Rochester.

If your home or property has suffered water damage, whether small or large, know the signs to look for and act quickly before more extensive damage is done.

  1. Obviously, if your home or business has been flooded and there’s water standing in the lower level, you know you need to act quickly and contact a water removal and restoration team to help with cleanup.
  2. Perhaps you walk into your laundry room and find water dripping from a water pipe. Although this is a subtle water leak, it can lead to more severe water damage. Don’t ignore the signs and act promptly to repair the source of the leak.
  3. Water drips can lead to puddles on concrete, carpet, or flooring. This may mean that you have water seeping, a leak in the foundation, or poor ventilation.
  4. If the lower level smells wet, musty, or moist, it’s a good indicator that water is leaking somewhere, somehow. Investigate and be certain the smell isn’t from excessive humidity. If it isn’t, contact a professional to determine the source of the leak.
  5. Discoloration of walls or ceilings. Water leaking from the ceiling doesn’t always just leave a dark color. Often it causes paint or paneling to fade, indicating a water leak from the attic.
  6. Suppose you enter your laundry room or living room and notice mold on the walls, floors, or ceilings. Don’t wait. Contact a professional to help determine the cause of the water leak and assist with cleanup before it becomes a health hazard.

While these things give your cozy St. Charles, MN, home a beautiful glow, the ambience can quickly take a turn and you may find yourself needing fire damage cleanup help.

The frigid winters in Minnesota are known for keeping many of us indoors. We fend off the winter chill with layers, furnaces, fireplaces, and space heaters, but sometimes these items can get too hot. Many of the heaters we use to keep us warm can lead to house fires if we’re not careful. Coupled with the candles and lights we use to decorate for the holidays, the number of house fires actually goes up around this time of year. The fire damage cleanup professionals at ServiceMaster of Rochester want to help you stay safe this winter by sharing the top fire hazards during the winter and holiday season!

  1. Christmas trees. If you enjoy the look and smell of a real Christmas tree, by all means, purchase one. But be careful when wrapping it with lights and be certain to keep your tree watered. It’s also important to keep the tree away from fireplaces, space heaters, and candles.
  2. Candles. Candles are beautiful when lit and give a warm, cozy, and even romantic feeling to the atmosphere. However, never leave candles unattended and never place them near newspapers, curtains, or other flammable items.
  3. Chimneys and fireplaces. Who doesn’t enjoy sitting by the fire with loved ones or relaxing with a good book? Have your chimney cleaned and inspected each year by a professional, and keep the fireplace screen in place to prevent flying embers. Have Christmas stockings hanging from the mantle? Please take a minute and remove them before starting the fireplace.
  4. Space heaters. If your home doesn’t include a fireplace, perhaps you’ve purchased a space heater for those colder days and evenings. Use heaters wisely and keep papers, furniture, bedding, and curtains a good distance to prevent fire.
  5. Stoves and ovens. The holidays are a time to cook, bake, grill, and make meals for family get-togethers or a night in with friends. When cooking on the stove, stay nearby and never leave a fire or pot unattended. Do not wear loose clothing that could catch fire and keep an eye on food in the oven.
  6. Smoke alarms. Last, if you do not have smoke alarms in your home, install them. If smoke alarms are already placed appropriately throughout your home, be certain to check the batteries at least twice per year and test the alarm to be sure it works.

Prepare Your House and Attic to Avoid Winter Water Damage in St. Charles, MN

October 31st, 2018 · No Comments

When winter arrives in the upper Midwest, temperatures plummet and pipes tend to freeze, leaving St. Charles, MN, homeowners at risk of water damage. What many tend to overlook is the fact that attics can suffer from water damage as well. When your attic suffers from water damage and needs restoration services, contact ServiceMaster of Rochester.

Follow a few simple steps to help prevent water damage, mold, and structural damage in your attic:

  1. Roof ventilation. Check the ventilation of your roof and ensure there’s cold air circulating around the eaves and ridges of the roof. This way, if any warm air is rising from the living area, the cold air will not allow for melting.
  2. Living spaces. Seal off living spaces by being certain no warm air is going to the attic through holes in the ceiling, fans, or light fixtures. If so, try some caulk to keep the warm air in.
  3. Insulate. Proper insulation can help prevent heat from entering the attic, thereby preventing thawing of ice and snow on the roof which can leak into the attic and cause water damage.
  4. Prevent ice dams. If possible, remove snow with a roof rake to prevent ice dams. If not done properly, ice dams can damage your shingles which can allow water to slowly leak into your attic.
  5. Clean rain gutters and downspouts. Remove any leaves and debris from your rain gutters and downspouts before winter arrives and ensure they allow water to flow freely.

When the fall months arrive, take some time to prepare your home and attic against the wicked Minnesota winters. Clean the rain gutters and downspouts, insulate, seal off living spaces, and be certain your roof and attic have proper ventilation. Taking the time to prepare now may save you time and money in the future.

At ServiceMaster of Rochester, we understand how dramatic and traumatic water damage in your attic can be. That’s why we stand ready and available to help you with water damage cleanup in St. Charles, MN. Contact us today at (507) 282-5747 or visit us here.
